brahmanatv ke liye tapasya karane vale matang ki indr se batachit

yudhishthir ne poochha- dharmatmaoan mean shreshth nareshvar! ap buddhi, vidya, sadachar, shil aur vibhinn prakar ke sampoorn sadgunoan se sampann haian. apaki avastha bhi sabase b di hai. ap buddhi, prajna aur tapasya se vishisht haian; atah maian ap se dharm ki bat poochhata hooan. sansar mean apake siva doosara koee aisa nahian hai, jisase sab prakar ke prashn poochhe ja sakean. nripashreshth! yadi kshatriy, vaishy athava shoodr brahmanatv prapt karana chahe to vah kis upay se use pa sakata hai? yah mujhe bataiye. pitamah! yadi koee brahmanatv pane ki ichchha kare to vah use tapasya, mahan karm athava vedoan ke svadhyay adi kis upay se prapt kar sakata hai?

bhishm ji ne kaha- tat yudhishthir! kshatriy adi tin varnoan ke liye brahmanatv prapt karana atyant kathin hai, kyoanki yah samast praniyoan ke liye sarvottam sthan hai. tat! bahut-si yoniyoan mean baranbar janm lete-lete kabhi kisi samay sansari jiv brahman ki yoni mean janm leta hai. yudhishthir! is vishay mean janakar manushy matang aur gardabhi ke sanvadaroop is prachin itihas ka udaharan diya karate haian. tat! poorvakal mean kisi brahman ke ek matang namak putr hua, jo (any varn ke purush se utpann hone par bhi brahmanochitt sanskaroan ke prabhav se) unake saman varn ka hi samajha jata tha, vah samast sadgunoan se sampann tha. shatruoan ko santap dene vale kuntikumar! ek din apane pita ke bhejane par matang kisi yajaman ka yajn karane ke liye gadhoan se jute hue shighragami rath par baithakar chala.

rajan! rath ka bojh dhote hue ek chhoti avastha ke gadhe ko usaki mata ke nikat hi matang ne baranbar chabuk se marakar usaki nak mean ghav kar diya. putr ka bhala chahane vali gadhi us gadhe ki nak mean dussah ghav hua dekh use samajhati huee boli- beta! shok n karo. tumhare oopar brahman nahian, chandal savar hai. ’brahman mean itani kroorata nahian hoti. brahman sab ke prati maitribhav rakhane vala bataya jata hai. jo samast praniyoan ko upadesh dene vala achary hai, vah kaise kisi par prahar karega? yah svabhav se hi papatma hai; isiliye doosare ke bachche par daya nahian karata hai. yah apane is kukrity dvara apani chandal yoni ka hi samman badha raha hai. jatigat svabhav hi manobhav par niyantran karata hai.

gadhi ka yah darun vachan sunakar matang turant rath se utar p da aur gadhi se is prakar bola- kalyanamayi gardabhi! meri mata kis se kalankit huee hai? too mujhe chandal kaise samajhati hai? shighr mujhase sari bat bata. gadhi! tujhe kaise maloom hua ki maian chandal hooan? kis karm se mera brahmanatv nasht hua hai? too b di samajhadar hai; atah ye sari batean mujhe thik-thik bata.

gadahi boli- matang! too yauvan ke mad se matavali huee ek brahmani ke pet se shoodr jatiy naee dvara paida kiya gaya, isiliye too chandal hai aur teri mata ke isi vyabhichar karm se tera brahmanatv nasht ho gaya hai.

gadahi ke aisa kahane par matang phir apane ghar ko laut gaya. use lautakar aya dekh pita ne is prakar kaha- beta! maianne to tumhean yajn karane ke bhari kary par laga rakha tha, phir tum laut kaise aye? tum kushal se to ho n?
