sh‍vayamh‍bhuv manu ke kathananusar dharm ka sh‍varup, pap se shuddhi ke lie prayashchit, abhakshh‍y vash‍tuoan ka varnan tatha dan ke adhikari evan anadhikari ka vivechan

yudhishthir ne poochha- pitamah kh‍ya bhakshh‍y hai aur kh‍ya abhakshh‍y! kis vash‍tu ka dan uttam mana jata hai kaun dan ka patr hai athava kaun apatr! sab mujhe bataiye. rajan is vishay mean log prajapati manu aur siddh purushoan ke sanvad rup is prachin itihas ka udaharan diya karate haian. pahale ki bat hai ek samay bahut se vrat parayan tapash‍vi rrishi ekatr ho prajapati raja manu ke pas gaye aur un baithe hue naresh se dharm ki bat poochhate hue bole- 'prajapate ann kh‍ya hai patr kaisa hona chahiye! dan, adhh‍yayan aur tap ka kh‍ya sh‍varup hai kh‍ya kartavh‍y hai aur kh‍ya akartavh‍y yah sab hamean bataiye.

unake is prakar poochhane par bhagavan sh‍vayamh‍bhuv manu ne kaha- 'maharshiyo maian sankshep aur vish‍tar ke sath dharm ka yatharthash‍varup batata hooan ap log sune. jinake doshoan ka vishesh rup se ulh‍lekh nahian hua hai, aise karm ban jane par unake dosh ke nivaran ke liye jap, hom, upavas, ath‍majnan, pavitr nadiyoan mean sh‍nan tatha jahaan jap–hom adi mean tath‍par rahane val punh‍yath‍ma purush rahate hoan us sh‍than ka sevan– ye samanh‍y prayashchit haian ye sare karm punh‍yadayak haian parvat suvarnaprashan (sone se sh‍parsh karaye hue jal ka pan) rath‍n adi se mishrit jal mean sh‍nan, dev sh‍thanoan ki yatra aur ghritapan ye sab manushh‍y ko shighr hi pavitr kar dete haian.

isamean sanshay nahian haian. vidvan purush kabhi garv n kare aur yadi dirghayu ki ichh‍chha ho to tin rat taph‍takrichh‍chhravrat ki vidhi se garam garam doodh, ghrit aur jal piye. bina di huee vash‍tu ko n lena, dan, adhh‍yayan aur tap mean tath‍par rahana kisi bhi prani ki hiansa n karana sath‍y bolana krodh th‍yag dena aur yajn karana ye sab dharm ke lakshan haian. ek hi kriya desh aur kal ke bhed se dharm ya adharm ho jati hai chori karana, jhooth bolana evan hiansa karana adi adharm mean bhi avash‍tha vishesh mean dharm mane gaye haian. is prakar vijn purushoan ki drishti mean dharm aur adharm dono hi desh kal ke bhed se do do prakar ke haian dharm mean jo apravriti aur pravriti hoti hai ye bhi lok aur ved ke bhed se do prakar ki hai. (arthat laukiki apravriti aur laukiki pravriti vaidiki apravriti aur vaidiki pravriti) vaidiki apravriti ka phal hai mamath‍v aur vaidiki ki pravriti ke arthat sakam karm ka phal hai janm maran rup sansar laukiki ki apravriti aur pravriti ye donoan yadi ashubh ho to unaka phal bhi ashubh samajhean tatha shubh hoan to unaka phal bhi shubh janana chahie; kyoanki ye donoan hi shubh aur ashubharup hoti haian. devataoan ke nimitt devayukh‍t pran aur pranadata in charoan ki apekshapoorvak jo kuchh kiya jata hai usase ashubh ka hi phal hota hai. pranoan par sanshay n hone ki sthiti athava kisi pratyaksh labh ke lie yahaan ashubh karm ban jata hai use ichh‍chhapoorvak karane ke karan usake dosh ki nivriti ke liye prayashchit ka vidhan hai.'
