vyas aur maitrey ka sanvad - dan ki prashansa aur karm ka rahasy

yudhishthir ne poochha- satyapurushoan mean shreshth pitamah! vidya, tap aur dan- inamean se kaun-sa shreshth hai? yah maian apase poochhata hooan, mujhe bataiye.

bhishm ji ne kaha- rajan! is vishay mean shrikrishn dvaipayan vyas aur maitrey ke sanvadaroop is prachin itihas ka udaharan diya jata hai.

nareshvar! ek samay ki bat hai, bhagavan shrikrishn dvaipayan vyas ji gupt roop se vicharate hue varanasipuri mean ja pahuanche. vahaan muniyoan ki mandali mean baithe hue munivar maitrey ji ke yahaan ve upasthit hue. pas akar baithe hue munivar vyas ji ko pahachanakar maitreyi ji ne unaka poojan kiya aur unhean uttam ann bhojan karaya. vah uttam labhadayak aur sabaki ruchi ke anukool ann bhojan karake mahamana vyas ji bahut sanjusht hue. phir jab ve vahaan se chalane lage to muskaraye. unhean muskarate dekh maitrey ji ne vyas ji se poochha- ‘dharmatman! vidvan! maian apako abhivadan[1] evan pranam karake yah poochhata hooan ki ap abhi-abhi jo muskaraye haian, usaka kya karan hai? apako hansi kaise ayi? ap to tapasvi aur dhairyavan haian. apako kaise sahasa ullas ho aya? yah mujhe bataiye.

tat! maian apane mean tapasyajanit saubhagy dekhata hooan aur ap mean yahaan sahaj mahabhagy pratishthit hai (kyoanki ap mere guruputr haian). jivatma aur paramatma mean maian bahut tho da antar manata hooan. paramatma ka sabhi padarthoan ke sath sambandh hai; kyoanki vah sarvavyapi hai. isiliye maian use jivatma ki apeksha shreshth hi manata hooan, kintu ap to jivatma ko paramatma se abhinn janane vale haian, phir apaka acharan is manyata se bhinn ho raha hai; kyoanki apako kuchh vismay hua hai aur mujhe nahian hua hai.'

vyas ji ne kaha- brahman! atithi ko atyant gaurav pradan karate hue usaki ichchha ke anusar satkar karana ‘atichchhand' kahalata hai aur vani dvara atithi ke gaurav ka jo prakashan kiya jata hai, use ‘ativad’ kahate haian. mujhe yahaan atichchhand aur ativad donoan prapt hue haian, isiliye mera yah vismay evan harshollas prakat hua hai. (dan aur atithy adi ka mahattv vedoan ke dvara pratipadit hua hai). vedoan ka vachan kabhi mithya nahian ho sakata. bhala, ved kyoan asaty kahega?

ved manushy ke liye tin batoan ko uttam vrat batate haian- (1.) kisi ke prati droh n kare, (2.) dan de tatha (3.) doosaroan se sada saty bole. ved ke is kathan ka sabase pahale rrishiyoan ne palan kiya. hamane bhi bahut pahale se ise sun rakha hai aur is samay bhi ved ki is ajna ka palan karana hamara kartavy hai. shastravidhi ke anusar diya hua tho da-sa bhi dan mahan phal dene vala hota hai. tumane eershyarahit hriday se bhookhe-pyase atithi ko ann-jal ka dan kiya hai.

prabho! maian bhookha aur pyasa tha. tumane mujh bhookhe-pyase ko ann-jal dekar tript kiya. is puny ke prabhav se mahan yajnoan dvara prapt hone vale b de-b de lokoan par tumane vijay payi hai- yah mujhe pratyaksh dikhayi deta hai.
