bhishhmaji ne kaha- rajan! is samhpoorn jagath ka mool karan tap hi hai, aisa vidvanh purush kahate haian. jis moodhane tapashya nahian ki hai, use apane shubh karmoan ka phal nahian milata hai. bhagavan prajapati ne tap se hi is samasht sansar ki srishti ki hai tatha rrishiyoan ne tap se hi vedoan ka jnan prapt kiya hai. jo–jo phal, mool aur anhn haian, unako vidhata ne tapase hi utapanhn kiya hai. tapashya se siddh hue ekagrachit mahathma purush tinoan lokoan ko prathyaksh dekhate haian. aushadh, aroghy adi ki prapti tatha nana prakar ki kriyaean tapashya se hi siddh hoti hai; khyoanki prathyek sadhan ki j d tapashya hi hai. sansar mean jo kuchh bhi durlabh vashtu ho, vah sab tapashya se sulabh ho sakati hai. rrishiyoan ne tapashya se hi anima adi ashhtavidh aishhvary ko prapht kiya hai, isamean sanshay nahian hai. sharabi, kisi ki samhmati ke bina hi usaki vashtu utha lene vala (chor), garbhahathyara aur gurupathnigami manushhy bhi achhchhi tarah ki huee tapashya dvara hi pap se chhutakara pata hai. tapashya ke anek roop hai aur bhinhn–bhinhn sadhanoan evan upayoan dvara manushhy usamean pravrit hota hai; parantu jo nivritimarg se chal raha hai, usake liye upavas se badhakar doosara koee tap nahian hai. maharaj! ahiansa, sathyabhashan, dan aur indriy–sanyam- in sabase badhakar tap hai aur upavas se b di koee tapashya nahian hai. dan se badhakar koee dushhkar dharm nahian hai, mata ki seva se b da koee doosara ashray nahian hai, tinoan vedoan ke vidvanoan se shreshhth koee vidvanh nahian hai aur sannhyas sabase b da tap hai. is sansar mean dharmik purush shvarg ke sadhanabhoot dharm ki raksha ke liye indriyoan ko surakshit (sanyamashil banaye) rakhate haian. rakhate haian. parantu dharm aur arth donoan ki siddhi ke liye tap hi shreshhth sadhan hai aur upavas se badhakar koee tapashya nahian hai. rrishi, pitar, devata, manushhy, pashu–pakshi tatha doosare jo charachar prani haian, ve sab tapashya mean hi tathpar rahate haian. tapashya se hi unhhean siddhi prapht hoti hai. isi prakar devataoan ne bhi tapashya se hi mahathvapoorn pad prapht kiya hai. ye jo bhinhn–bhinhn abhishht phal kahe gaye haian, ve sab sada tapashya se hi sulabh hote haian. tapashya se nishhchay hi devathv bhi prapht kiya ja sakata hai. is prakar shrimahabharat shantiparv ke antargat apaddharmaparv mean tapashya ki prashansavishayak ek sau ikasathavaan adhhyay poora hua.
