samh‍banh‍dh– doosare adhh‍yay mean bhagavan ne ashochh‍yananh‍vashochash‍th‍vamh[2] se lekar dehi nitayamavadhh‍yoayamh[3] tak ath‍matth‍v ka niroopan karate hue saankhh‍yayog ka pratipadan kiya aur buddhiryoge tvimaan shrrinu[4] se lekar tada yogamavaph‍sh‍yasi[5] tak samabuddhi roop karmayog ka varnan kiya. isake pashchath chauvanavean shh‍lok se adhh‍yay ki samapt‍i paryanh‍t arjun ke poochhane par bhagavan ne samabuddhi roop karmayog ke dvara parameshvar ko praph‍t hue sthitaprajn siddh purush ke lakshan, acharan aur mahatth‍v ka pratipadan kiya. vahaan karmayog ki mahima kahate hue bhagavan ne saiantalisavean aur a datalisavean shh‍lokoan mean karmayog ka sh‍varoop batalakar arjun ko karm karane ke liye kaha, unchasavean mean samabuddhi roop karmayogi ki apeksha sakam karm ka sh‍than bahut-hi nicha batalaya, pachasavean mean sam‍buddhiyukt purush ki prashansa karake arjun ko karmayog mean lagane ke liye kaha, ikh‍yavanavean mean samabuddhiyukt jnani purush ko anamay padh ki prapti batalayi. is prasang ko sunakar arjun usaka yatharth abhipray nishchit nahian kar sake. buddhi shabh‍d ka arth jnan man lene se unh‍hean bhram ho gaya, bhagavan ke vachanoan mean karm ki apeksha jnan ki prashansa pratit hone lagi evan ve vachan unako sh‍pasht n dikhaee dekar mile hue se jan p dane lage. atev bhagavan se unaka sh‍pashtikaran karavane ki aur apane liye nishchit shreyasadhan janane ki ichh‍chha se arjun poochhate haian.

arjun bole– he janardan! yadi apako karm ki apeksha jnan shreshh‍th manh‍y hai to phir he keshav! mujhe bhayankar karm mean kh‍yoan lagate haian? ap mile hue se vachanoan se meri buddhi ko mano mohit kar rahe hai.[6] isaliye us ek bat ko nishchit karake kahiye, jisase mean kalh‍yan ko prapt ho jaooan. samh‍banh‍dh– is prakar arjun ke poochhane par bhagavan unaka nishchit kartavh‍y bhaktipradhan karmayog batalane ke uddeshh‍y se pahale unake prashn ka uttar dete hue yah dikhalate haian ki mere vachan vh‍yamishr arthat mile hue nahian haian varan sarvatha sh‍pasht aur alag alag haian.

shribhagavan bole– he nishh‍pap! is lok mean do prakar ki nishtha pahale kahi gayi hai. unamean se saankhh‍yayogiyoan ki nishtha to jnanayog se[7] aur yogiyoan ki nishtha karmayog se[8] hoti hai. manushh‍y n to karmoan ka aramh‍bh kiye bina nishh‍karmata ko yani yoganishh‍tha ko praph‍t hota hai aur n karmoan ke keval th‍yag matr se siddhi yani saankhh‍yanishtha ko hi praph‍t hota hai.[9] ni:sandeh koee bhi manushh‍y kisi bhi kal mean kshanamatr bhi bina karm kiye nahian rahata; kh‍yoanki sara manushy samuday prakritijanit gunoan dvara paravash hua karm karane ke liye badhh‍y kiya jata hai.[10] samh‍banh‍dh– poorv shlok mean yah bat kahi gayi ki koee bhi manushh‍y kshanamatr bhi karm kiye bina nahian rahata; is par yah shanka hoti hai ki indriyoan ki kriyaoan ko hath se rokakar bhi to manushh‍y karmoan ka th‍yag kar sakata hai. is par kahate haian– jo moodhabuddhi manushh‍y samash‍t indriyoan ko hathapoorvak oopar se rokakar man se un indriyoan ke vishayoan ka chinh‍tan karata rahata hai, vah mithh‍yachari arthat damh‍mi kaha jata hai.[1]

kiantu he arjun! jo purush man se indriyoan ko vash mean karake anasakt hua samash‍t indriyoan dvara karmayog ka acharan karata hai, vahi shreshth hai. samh‍banh‍dh– arjun ne yah poochha tha ki ap mujhe ghor karm mean kh‍yoan lagate haian, usake uttar mean oopar se karmoan ka th‍yag karane vale mithh‍yachari ki ninh‍da aur karmayogi ki prashansa karake ab unh‍hean karm karane ke liye ajna dete hai– too shastravihit kartavh‍yakarm kar; kh‍yoanki karm n karane ki apeksha karm karana shreshth hai[11] tatha karm n karane se tera sharir-nirvah bhi nahian siddh hoga. samh‍banh‍dh– yahaan yah jijnasa hoti hai ki shastravihit yajn, dan aur tap adi shubhakarm bhi to banh‍dhan ke hetu mane gaye haian; phir karm n karane ki apeksha karm shreshth kaise hai; is par kahate haian– yajn ke nimitt kiye jane vale karmoan se atirikt doosare karmoan mean laga hua hi yah manushh‍y samuday karmoan se bandhata hai. isaliye he arjun! too asakti se rahit hokar us yajn ke nimitt hi bhalibhaanti kartavyakarm kar. samh‍banh‍dh– poorv shlok mean bhagavan ne yah bat kahi ki yajn ke nimitt karm karane vala manushh‍y karmoan se nahian bandhata; isaliye yahaan yah jijnasa hoti hai ki yajn kisako kahate hai, use kh‍yoan karana chahiye aur usake liye karm karane vala manushh‍y kaise nahian bandhata. atev in batoan ko samajhane ke liye bhagavan brahma ji ke vachanoan ka praman dekar kahate haian– prajapati brahma ne kalh‍p ke adi mean yajnasahit prajaoan ko rachakar unase kaha ki tum log is yajn ke dvara vriddhi ko prapt hoo aur yah yajn[12] tum logoan ko ichchhit bhog pradan karane vala ho. tum log yajn ke dvara devataoan ko unh‍nat karo aur ve devata tum logoan ko unh‍nat karean. is prakar ni:sh‍varth bhav se ek-doosare ko unh‍nat karate hue tum log param kalh‍yan ko praph‍t ho jaoge.[13] yajn ke dvara badhaye hue devata tum logoan ko bina maange hi ichh‍chhit bhog nishchay hi dete raheange. is prakar un devataoan ke dvara diye hue bhogoan ko jo purush unako bina diye sh‍vayan bhogata hai, vah chor hi hai.[14] yajn se bache hue anh‍n ko khane vale shreshth purush sab papoan se mukt ho jate haian aur jo papi log apana sharir poshan karane ke liye hi anh‍n pakate haian, ve to pap ko hi khate haian. samh‍banh‍dh– yahaan yah jijnas hoti hai ki yajn n karane se kh‍ya hani hai; is par srishti chakr ko surakshit rakhane ke liye yajn ki avashh‍yakata ka pratipadan karate haian. samh‍poorn prani anh‍n se uth‍panh‍n hote haian. anh‍n ki uth‍patti vrishti se hoti hai, vrishti yajn se hoti hai aur yajn vihitakarmoan se uth‍panh‍n hone vala hai. karm samuday ko too ved se uth‍panh‍n aur ved ko avinashi paramatma se uth‍panh‍n hua jan. isase siddh hota hai ki sarvavh‍yapi param akshar paramatma sada hi yajn mean pratishthit hai.[15]

he parth! jo purush is lok mean is prakar paramh‍para se prachalit srishtichakr[16] ke anukool nahian baratata arthat apane kartavh‍y ka palan nahian karata, vah indriyoan dvara bhogoan me raman karane vala papayu purush vh‍yarth hi jita hai. parantu jo manushh‍y ath‍ma mean hi raman karane vala aur ath‍ma mean hi tript tatha ath‍ma mean hi santusht ho, usake liye koee kartavh‍y nahian hai.[17] kh‍yoanki us mahapurush ko is vishv mean n to karm karane se koee prayojan rahata hai aur n karmoan ke n karane se hi koee prayojan rahata hai tatha samh‍poorn praniyoan mean bhi isaka kichiantamatr bhi sh‍varth ka samh‍banh‍dh nahian rahata. samh‍banh‍dh– yahaan tak bhagavan ne bahut-se hetu batalakar yah bat siddh ki ki jab tak manushh‍y ko paramashrey roop paramatma ki prapti n ho jaye, tab tak usake liye sh‍vadharm ka palan karana arthat apane varnashram ke anusar vihitakarmoan ka anushthan ni:sh‍varth bhav se karana avashh‍y kartavh‍y hai aur paramatma ko prapt hue purush ke liye kisi prakar ka kartavh‍y n rahane par bhi usake man indriyoan dvara lok sangrah ke liye praramh‍bhanusar karm hote haian. ab uparyukt varnan ka lakshh‍y karate hue bhagavan arjun ko anasakt bhav se kartavh‍y karm karane ke liye ajna dete haian– isaliye too niranh‍tar asakti se rahit hokar sada kartavh‍y karm ko bhalibhaanti karata raha; kh‍yoanki asakti se rahit hokar karm karata hua manushh‍y paramatma ko praph‍t ho jata hai. janakadi jnanijan bhi asaktirahit karm dvara hi param siddhi ko prapt hue the.[18] isaliye tatha lokasangrah ko dekhate hue bhi too karm karane ko hi yogh‍y hai arthat tujhe karm karana hi uchit hai.[19] samh‍banh‍dh– poorv shlok mean bhagavan ne arjun ko lokasangrah ki or dekhate hue karmoan ka karana uchit batalaya; is par yah jijnasa hoti hai ki karm karane se kis prakar lokasangrah hota hai; at: yahi bat samajhane ke liye kahate haian–

shreshth purush jo-jo acharan karata hai, anh‍y purush bhi vaisa hi acharan karate haian,[20] samash‍t manushh‍y samuday usi ke anusar baratane lag jata hai. he arjun! mujhe in tinoan lokoan mean n to kuchh kartavh‍y hai aur n koee bhi prapt karane yogh‍y vash‍tu apraph‍t hai, to bhi maian karm mean hi baratata hooan. kh‍yoanki he parth! yadi kadachit maian savadhan hokar karmoan mean n baratooan to b di hani ho jaye; kh‍yoanki manushh‍y sab prakar se mere hi marg ka anusaran karate haian.[21] isaliye yadi maian karm n karooan to ye sab manushh‍y nasht bhrasht ho jayan aur maian sankarata ka karane vala hoooan tatha is samash‍t praja ko nasht karane vala banooan.[22] isaliye he bharat! karm mean asakt hue ajnanijan jis prakar karm karate haian, asakti rahit vidvan bhi lokasangrah karana chahata hua usi prakar karm kar[23] paramatma ke sh‍varoop mean atal sthit hue jnani purush ko chahiye ki vah shash‍travihit karmoan mean asakti vale ajnaniyoan ki bu‍ddhi mean bhram arthat karmoan mean ashraddha uth‍panh‍n n karean; kiantu sh‍vayan shastravihit samash‍t karm bhalibhaanti karata hua unase bhi vaise hi karavavean.[24][25]

vash‍tav mean samh‍poorn karm sab prakar se prakriti ke gunoan dvara kiye jate haian, to bhi jisaka anh‍t:karan ahankar se mohit ho raha hai, aisa ajnani maian karta hooan aisa manata hai.[26] parantu he mahabaho! gunavibhag aur karm vibhag ke tattv ko janane vala[27] jnanayogi samh‍poorn gun hi gunoan mean barat rahe haian, aisa samajhakar unamean asakt nahian hota. prakriti gunoan se ath‍yanh‍t mohit hue manushh‍y gunoan mean aur karmoan mean asakt rahate haian, un poornataya n samajhane vale manh‍dabuddhi ajnaniyoan ko poornataya janane vala jnani vichalit n kare.[28] samh‍banh‍dh– arjun ki prarthana ke anusar bhagavan ne use ek nishchit kalh‍yan karak sadhan batalane ke uddeshh‍y se; chauthe shh‍lok se lekar yahaan tak yah bat siddh hai ki manushh‍y kisi bhi sthiti mean kh‍yoan n ho, use apane varn, ashram, sh‍vabhav aur paristhiti ke anuroop vihit karm karate rahana chahiye. is bat ko siddh karane ke liye poorv shh‍lokoan mean bhagavan ne kramash: nimh‍nalikhit batean kahian haian–

  1. karm kiye bina naishh‍karmh‍y siddhi roop karmanishtha nahian milati.[29]
  2. karmoan ka th‍yag kar dene matr se jnananishtha siddh nahian hoti.[30]
  3. ek kshan ke liye bhi manushh‍y sh‍vartha karm kiye bina nahian rah sakata.[31]
  4. bahar se karmoan ka th‍yag karake man se vishayoan ka chinh‍tan karate rahana mithh‍yachar hai. [32]
  5. man indriyoan ko vash mean karake nishh‍kam bhav se karm karane vala shreshth hai.[33]
  6. karm n karane ki apeksha karm karana shreshth hai.[34]
  7. bina karm kiye sharir nirvah bhi nahian ho sakata.[35]
  8. yajn ke liye kiye jane vale karm banh‍dhan karane vale nahian, balki mukti ke karan haian.[36]
  9. karm karane ke liye prajapati ki ajna hai aur ni:sh‍varth bhav se usaka palan karane se shrey ki prapti hoti hai.[37]
  10. kartavh‍y ka palan kiye bina bhogoan ka upabhog karane vala chor hai.[38]
  11. kartavh‍y palan karake yajnashesh se sharir nirvah ke liye bhojanadi karane vala sab papoan se chhoot jata hai.[39]
  12. jo yajnadi n karake keval sharir palan ke liye bhojan pakata hai, vah papi hai.[40]
  13. kartavh‍y karm ke th‍yag dvara srishti chakr mean badha pahuanchane vale manushh‍y ka jivan vh‍yarth aur papamay hai.[41]
  14. anasakti bhav se karm karane se paramatma ki prapti hoti hai.[42]
  15. poorvakal mean janakadi ne bhi karmoan dvara hi siddhi prapt ki thi.[43]
  16. doosare manushy shreshth mahapurush ka anukaran karate haian, isaliye shreshth mahapurush ko karm karana chahiye.[44]
  17. bhagavan ko kuchh bhi kartavh‍y nahian hai, to bhi ve lokasangrah ke liye karm karate haian.[45]
  18. jnani ke liye koee kartavh‍y nahian hai, to bhi use lokasangrah ke liye karm karana chahiye.[46]
  19. jnani ko sh‍vayan vihitakarmoan ka th‍yag karake ya karmath‍yag upadesh dekar kisi prakar bhi logoan ko kartavh‍y karm se vichalit n karana chahiye varan sh‍vayan karm karana aur doosaroan se karavana chahiye.[47]
  20. jnani mahapurush ko uchit hai ki vihitakarmoan ka sh‍varoopat: th‍yag karane ka upadesh dekar karmasakt manushh‍yoan ko vichalit n karean.[48]

is prakar karmoan ki avashh‍yak kartavh‍yata ka pratipadan karake ab bhagavan arjun ki doosare shh‍lok mean ki huee prarthana ke anusar use param kalh‍yan ki prapti ka aikantik aur sarvashreshth nishchit sadhan batalate hue yuddh ke liye ajna dete haian– mujh arnh‍tayami paramatma mean lage hue chitt dvara samh‍poorn karmoan ka mujhamean arpan karake[49] asharahit, mamatarahit aur santaparahit hokar yuddh kar. jo koee manushh‍y doshadrishti se rahit aur shraddhayukt hokar mere is mat ka sada anusaran karate haian, ve bhi samh‍poorn karmoan se chhoot jate haian.[50]

indriy-indriy ke arth mean arthat prath‍yek indriy ke vishay mean rag aur dvesh chhipe hue sthit haian. manushh‍y ko un donoan ke vash mean nahian hona chahiye; kh‍yoanki ve donoan hi isake kalh‍yan marg mean vighn[52] karane vale mahan shatru haian. samh‍banh‍dh – yahaan arjun ke man mean yah bat a sakati hai ki maian yah yuddh roop ghor karman karake yadi bhikshavritti se apana nirvah karata hua shantimay karmoan mean laga rahooan to sahaj hi ragadvesh se chhoot sakata hooan; phir ap mujhe yuddh karane ke liye ajna kh‍yoan de rahe haian; is par bhagavan kahate haian– achh‍chhi prakar acharan mean laye hue doosare ke dharm se gun rahit bhi apana dharm ati uttam hai.[53] apane dharm mean to marana bhi kalh‍yan karak hai[54] aur doosare ka dharm bhay ko dene vala hai. samh‍banh‍dh– manushh‍y ka sh‍vadharm palan karane mean hi kalh‍yan hai, paradharm ka sevan aur nishiddh karmoan ka acharan karane mean sab prakar se hani hai. is bat ko bhalibhaanti samajh lene ke bad bhi manushh‍y apane ichh‍chha, vichar aur dharm ke viruddh papachar mean kis karan pravritt ho jate hai?[55]

  10. yadyapi gunatit jnani purush ka gunoan se ya unake kary se kuchh bhi samh‍banh‍dh nahian rahata; at: vah gunoan ke vash mean hokar karm karata hai, yah kahana nahian ban sakata; tathapi man, buddhi aur indriy adi ka sanghataroop jo usaka sharir logoan ki drishti mean vartaman hai, usake dvara usake aur logoan ke prarabh‍dhanusar kriya ka hona anivary hai; kh‍yoanki vah gunoan ka kary hone se gunoan mean atit nahian haian, balki us jnani ka sharir se sarvatha atit ho jana hi gunatit ho jana hai.
