is samay yah vichar gaun hai ki tumhare yuddh karane se bhishm mareange ki dron; mukhy prashh‍n yahi hai ki tum kis buddhi (hetu ya uddesh) se yuddh karane ko taiyar hue ho. yadi tumh‍hari buddhi sthitaprajnoan ke saman shuddh hogi aur yadi tum us pavitr buddhi se apana karttavy karane lagoge, to phir chahe bhishm marean ya dron, tujhe usaka pap nahian lagega. tum kuchh is phal ki asha se to yuddh kar hi nahian rahe ho ki bhishm mare jayan. jis rajy mean tumhara janm-siddh haq hai, usaka hissa tumane maanga, aur yuddh talane ke liye yathashakti har man kar bich-bachav karane ka bhi tumane bahut kuchh prayatn kiya; parantu jab is mel ke prayatn se aur sadhupan ke marg se nirvah nahian ho saka, tab lachari se tumane yuddh karane ka nishh‍chay kiya hai. isamean tumhara kuchh dosh nahian hai; kyoanki dusht manushy se, kisi brahman ki naeean, apane dharmanusar prapt hak ki bhiksha n maangate hue, mauka a p dane par kshatriyadharm ke anusar lok sangraharth usaki prapti ke liye yuddh karana hi tumhara kartavy hai[1]. bhagavan ke ukt yuktivad ko vyasaji ne bhi svikar kiya hai aur unhoanne isi ke dvara age chalakar shantiparv mean yudhishthir ka samadhan kiya hai[2].

parantu karm-akarm ka nirnay ke liye buddhi ko is tarah se shreshth man lean, to ab yah bhi avashh‍y jan lena chahiye ki shuddh buddhi kise kahate haian. kyoanki man aur buddhi donoan prakriti ke vikar haian; isaliye ve svabhavat; tin prakar ke arthat sattvik, rajas aur tamas ho sakate haian. isiliye gita mean kaha hai, ki shuddh ya sattvik buddhi vah hai ki jo buddhi se bhi pare rahane vale nity atma ke svaroop ko pahachane aur yah pahachan kar ki sab praniyoan mean ek hi atma hai, usi ke anusar kary-akary ka nirnay kare. is sattvik buddhi ka hi doosara nam samyabuddhi hai; aur isamean ‘samy’ shabd ka arth “sarvabhootantargat atma ki ekata ya samanata ko pahachanane vali” hai. jo buddhi is samanata ko nahian janati vah n to shuddh hai aur n sattvik. is prakar jab yah man liya gaya ki niti ka nirnay karane mean samy-buddhi hi shreshth hai; tab yah prashh‍n uthata hai ki buddhi ki is samata athava samy ko kaise pahachanana chahiye? kyoanki buddhi to aantarindriy hai, isaliye usaka bhala-burapan hamari aankhoan se dekh nahian p data. atev buddhi ki samata tatha shuddhata ki pariksha karane ke liye pahale manushy ke bahy acharan ko dekhana chahiye; nahian to koee bhi manushy aisa kah kar, ki meri buddhi shuddh hai, manamana bartav karane lagega.
