chhandogy[1],brihadaranayak[2] muradak[3] aur prashrn[4], adi upanishadoan mean baranbar batalaya gaya hai ki nity badalate rahane vale arthat nashavan nam-roop saty nahian haian; jise saty arthat nity sthir tattv dekhana ho, use apani drishti ko in nam-roopoan se bahut age pahuanchana chahiye. isi nam-roop ko kath[5] aur muradak [6] adi upanishadoan mean ‘avidya’ tatha shvetashvar upanishad[7] mean ‘maya’ kaha hai. bhagavadgita mean ‘maya,’ ‘moh’ aur ‘ajnan’ shabh‍doan se vahi arth vivakshit haian. jagat ke arambh mean jo kuchh tha, vah bina nam-roop ka tha arthat nirgun aur avyakt tha; phir age chal kar nam-roop mil jane se vahi vyakt aur sagun ban jata hai[8]. atev vikaravan athava nashavan nam-roop ko hi ‘maya ’ nam de kar kahate haian ki yah sagun athava drishh‍y-sashti ek mooladravy arthat eeshh‍var ki maya ka khel ya lila hai. ab is drishti se dekhean to saankhyoan ki prakriti avyakt bhale bani rahe, par vah sattv-raj-tamagunamayi hai, atah nam roop se yukt maya hi hai. is prakriti se vishh‍v ki jo utpatti ya phailav hota hai (jisaka varnan athavean prakaran mean kiya hai ), vah bhi to us maya ka sagun nam-roopatmak vikar hai. kyoanki koee bhi gun ho, vah indriyoan ko gochar hone vala aur isi se nam-roopatmak hi rahega.

sare adhibhautik shash‍tr bhi isi prakar maya ke varg mean a jate haian. itihas, bhoogarbhashash‍tr, vidyutashash‍tr, rasayanashash‍tr, padarth vijnan adi koee bhi shastr lijiye, usamean sab nam-roop ka hi to vivechan rahata hai arthat yahi varnan hota hai ki kisi bhi padarth ka ek nam-roop chala ja kar use doosara nam-roop kaise milata hai. udaharanarth, nam roop ke bhed ka hi vichar is shastr mean is prakar rahata hai; jaise pani jisaka nam hai, usako bhaf nam kab aur kaise milata hai athava kale-kaloote tarakol se lal-hare, nile-pile rangane ke rang (roop) kyoan kar banate haian, ityadi. atev nam-roop mean hi ulajhe hue in shash‍troan ke abhyas se, us saty vastu ka bodh nahi ho sakata ki jo nam-roop se pare haian. pragat hai ki jise sachche brahmash‍varoop ka pata lagana ho, usako apani drishti in sab adhibhautik arthat nam-roopatmak shash‍troan se pare pahuanchani chahie. aur yahi arth chhandogy upanishad mean, satavean adhyay ke arambh ki katha mean vyakt kiya gaya hai. katha ka arambh is prakar hai; narad rrishi sanatkumar arthat skand ke yahaan ja kar kahane lage ki, ‘mujhe atmajnan batao;’ tab sanatkumar bole ki, ‘pahale batalao, tumane kya sikha hai, phir maian batalata hooan.’
