pahale pipal ke vriksh ko hi ashvatth kahate the, kathopanishad[1] mean jo yah brahmamay amrit ashvatthavriksh kaha gaya hai -

oordhvamooloavakshakh aishaashvatthah sanatanah.
tadev shukran tadbrahm tadevamritamuchyate..

vah bhi yahi hai; aur “oordhvamoolamadhahshakhan” is pad-sadrishy se hi vyakt hota hai ki bhagavadgita ka varnan kathopanishad ke varnan se hi liya gaya hai. parameshvar svarg mean hai aur usase upaja hua jagadvriksh niche arthath manushyalok mean hai, atah varnan kiya gaya hai ki is vriksh ka mool arthath parameshvar oopar hai aur isaki anek shakhaean arthath jagath ka phailav niche vistrit hai. parantu prachin dharmagranthoan mean ek aur kalpana paee jati hai ki yah sansar-vriksh vatavriksh hoga, n pipal; kyoanki b d ke jha d ke paye oopar se niche ko latak ate haian. udaharan ke liye yah varnan hai, ki ashvatthavriksh adity ka vriksh hai aur “nyagrodho varuno vrikshah” - nyagrodh arthath niche (nyakh) badhane vala (rodh) b d ka pe़ d varun ka vriksh hai[2]. mahabharat mean likha hai ki markandey rrishi ne pralayakal mean balaroopi parameshvar ko ek (us pralayakal mean bhi nasht n hone vale, atev) avyay nyagrodh arthath b d ke pe d ki tahani par dekha tha[3]. isi prakar chhandogay upanishad mean yah dikhalane ke liye, ki avyakt parameshvar se apar drishy jagath kaise nirmit hota hai, jo drishtant diya hai vah bhi nyagrodh ke hi bij ka hai[4].

shvetashvatar upanishad mean bhi vishvavriksh ka varnan hai[5]; parantu vahaan khulasa nahian batalaya ki yah kaun sa vriksh hai. mundak upanishad[6] mean rrigved ka hi yah varnan le liya hai ki is vriksh par do pakshi (jivatma aur paramatma) baithe hue haian jinamean ek pippal arthath pipal ke phaloan ko khata hai. pipal aur b d ko chho d is sansar-vriksh ke svaroop ki tisari kalpana audumbar ki hai; evan puranoan mean yah dattatrey ka vriksh mana gaya hai. saraansh, prachin granthoan mean ye tinoan kalpanaean haian ki parameshvar ki maya se utpann hua jagat ek b da pipal, b d ya goolar hai; aur isi karan se vishnusahasranam mean vishnu ke ye tin[7] vrikshatmak nam diye haian - “nyagrodhodumbaroashvatthah”[8], evan samaj mean bhi ye tinoan vriksh devatatmak aur poojane yogy mane jate haian. isake atirikt vishnusahasranam aur gita, donoan hi mahabharat ke bhag haian; jabaki vishnusahasranam mean goolar, baragad (nyagrodh) aur ashvatth ye tin prithakh nam diye gaye haian; tab gita mean ‘ashvatth’ shabd ka pipal hi (goolar ya baragad nahian) arth lena chahiye, aur mool ka arth bhi vahi hai. “chhandaansi arthath ved jisake patte haian” is vaky ke ‘chhandaansi’ shabd mean chhadh = dhankana dhatu man kar[9] vriksh ko dhankanevale pattoan se vedoan ki samata varnit hai; aur ant mean kaha hai ki jab yah sampoorn varnan vaidi parampara ke anusar hai, tab ise jisane jan liya use vedavetta kahana chahiye. is prakar vaidik varnan ho chuka; ab isi vriksh ka doosare prakar se, arthath saankhyashastr ke anusar, varnan karate haian-]
