buddh ne isaka yah uttar diya hai, ki kisi rog ko door karane ke liye us rog ka mool karan dhooandh kar usi ko hatane ka prayatn jis prakar chatur vaidy kiya karata hai, usi prakar saansarik du:kh ke rog ko door karane ke liye

4. usi karan ko door karane vale marg ka avalanb buddhiman purush ko karana chahiye. in karanoan ka vichar karane se dekh p data hai ki trishna ya kamana hi is jagat ke sab du:khoan ki j d hai; aur, ek nam-roopatmak sharir ka nash ho jane par bache hue is vasanatmak bij hi se anyany nam-roopatmak sharir pun: pun: utpann hua karate haian. aur phir buddh ne nishchit kiya hai ki punarjanm ke du:khamay sansar se pind chhu dane ke liye indriy-nigrah se, dhyan se, tatha vairagy se trishna ka poornataya kshay karake sannyasi ya bhikshu ban jana hi ek yatharth marg hai, aur isi vairagy-yukt sannyas se atal shaanti evan sukh prapt hota hai. tatpary yah hai, ki yajn-yag adi ki, tatha atm-anatm-vichar ki jhanjhat mean p d kar in char drishy batoan par hi bauddh-dharm ki rachana ki gee hai. ve char batean ye haian:- saansarik du:kh ka astitv, usaka karan, usake nirodh ya nivaran karane ki avashyakata, aur use samool nasht karane ke lie vairagyaroop sadhan; athava bauddhoan ki paribhasha ke anusar kramash: du:kh, samuday, nirodh aur marg. apane dharm ke inhian char moolatattvoan ko buddh ne ‘ary-saty’ nam diya hai.

upanishad ke atmajnan ke badale char aryasatyoan ki drishy nianv ke oopar yadyapi is prakar bauddhadharm kh da kiya gaya hai; tathapi achal shaanti ya sukh pane ke liye trishna athava vasana ka kshay karake man ko nishkam karane ke jis marg (chauthe saty) ka upadesh buddh ne kiya hai vah marg, aur moksh-prapti ke liye upanishadoan mean varnit marg, donoan vastut: ek hi hai; isaliye yah bat spasht hai ki donoan dharmoan ka aantim drishy-sadhy man ki nirvishay sthiti hi hai. parantu in donoan dharmoan mean bhed yah hai, ki brahm tatha atma ko ek manane-vale upanishatkaroan ne man ki is nishkam avastha ko ‘atmanishtha’, ‘brahmasanstha’, ‘brahmabhoobhata’, ‘brahmanirvan’[1], arthat brahm mean atma ka lay hona adi aantim adhar-darshak nam diye haian, aur buddh ne use keval ‘nirvan’ arthat “viram pana, ya dipak bujh jane ke saman vasana ka nash hona” yah kriya-darshak nam diya hai. kyoanki, brahm ya atma ko bhram kah dene par yah prashn hi nahian rah jata, ki “viram kaun pata hai aur kisamean pata hai”[2]; evan buddh ne to yah spasht kah diya hai, ki chatur manushy ko is goodh prashn ka vichar bhi n karana chahiye[3].
