uttar- sharir ke bhitar rahane vali vayu ke paanch bhed mane jate haian- pran, apan, saman, udan aur vyan. inamean pran ka sthan hriday, apan ka guda, saman ka nabhi, udan ka kanth aur vyan ka samast sharir mana gaya hai. in paanchoan vayubhedoan ko 'panchapran' bhi kahate hai. atev yahaan paanchoan vayubhedoan ko jitakar in sabaka nirodh karane ke sadhan ko yajn ka roop dene ke liye pran shabd mean bahuvachan ka prayog kiya gaya hai. is sadhan mean agni aur havan karane yogy dravy donoan ke sthan mean pranoan ko hi rakha gaya hai. isaliye samajhana chahiye ki jis pranayam mean pran aur apan- in donoan ki gati rok di jati hai arthath n to poorak pranayam kiya jata hai aur n rechak, kiantu shvas aur prashvasoan ko band karake pran-apan adi samast vayubhedoan ko apane-apane sthanoan mean hi rok diya jata hai- vahi yahaan pran aur apan ki gati ko rokakar pranoan ka pranoan mean havan karana hai. is sadhan mean n to bahar ki vayu ko bhitar le jakar roka jata hai aur bhitar ki vayu ko bahar lakar; apane- apane sthanoan mean sthit panchavayu bhedoan ko vahian rok diya jata hai. isaliye ise ‘keval kumbhak’ kahate haian.
