garhapaty agh‍ni brahma ka sh‍varoop hai, kh‍yoanki brahma ji se hi usaka pradurbhav hua hai aur yah dakshinagh‍ni rudrash‍varoop hai, kh‍yoanki vah krodh roop aur prachanh‍d hai. hom ke aramh‍bh se lekar anh‍t tak jisake mukh mean ahuti dali jati hai, vah ahavaniy agh‍ni sh‍vayan maian hooan. jo manushh‍y bhaktiyukh‍t chith‍t se pratidin ahavaniy agh‍ni mean havan karata hai, vah prithh‍vi, aantariksh aur rrishiyoan-sahit sh‍vargalok par bhi adhikar praph‍t kar leta hai. yajnoan mean sab or se agh‍ni ke mukh mean havan kiya jata hai, isaliye vah ath‍yanh‍t kanh‍timan agh‍ni ‘ahavaniy’ sanjna ko praph‍t hota hai. agh‍nihotr athava anh‍yay yajnoan mean hom ke aramh‍bh se hi agh‍ni ke bhitar sab prakar se ahuti dali jati hai, isaliye bhi use ahavaniy kahate haian. nareshh‍var! ath‍mavetta vidvanoan ne adhh‍yath‍mik, adhidaivik aur adhibhautik- ye tin prakar ke du:kh batalaye haian. vidhivat hom karane par agh‍ni in tinoan prakar ke du:khoan se yajaman ka tran karata hai, isaliye us karm ko ved mean agh‍nihotr nam diya gaya hai. vishh‍vavidhata brahma ji ne hi sabase pahale agh‍nihotr ko prakat kiya. ved aur agh‍nihotr sh‍vat: uth‍panh‍n hue haian.

vedadhh‍yayan ka phal agh‍nahotr hai (arthat ved padhakar jisane agnihotr nahian kiya, usaka vah adhh‍yayan nishh‍phal hai). shash‍trajnan ka phal shil aur sadachar hai, sh‍tri ka phal rati aur putr hai tatha dhan ki saphalata dan aur upabhog karane mean haian. tinoan vedoan ke mantroan ke sanyog se agh‍nihotr ki pravrith‍ti hoti hai. rrikh, yaju: aur samaved ke pavitr mantroan tatha mimaansa sootroan ke dvara agh‍nihotr-karm ka pratipadan kiya jata hai. nareshh‍var! vasanh‍t-rritu ko brahman ka sh‍varoop samajhana chahiye tatha vah ved ki yoniroop hai, isaliye brahman ko vasanh‍t-rritu mean agh‍ni ki sh‍thapana karani chahiye.

niroopap! jo vasanh‍t-rritu mean agh‍nh‍yadhan karata hai, us brahman ki shrivriddhi hoti hai tatha usaka vaidik jnan bhi badhata hai. rajan! kshatriy ke liye grishh‍m–rritu mean agnyadhan karana shreshh‍th mana gaya hai. jo kshatriy grishh‍m-rritu mean agh‍ni-sh‍thapana karata hai, usaki samh‍patti, praja, pashu, dhan, tej, bal aur yash ki abhivriddhi hoti hai. sharath‍kal ki ratri sakshat vaishh‍y ka sh‍varoop hai, isaliye vaishh‍y ko sharad-rritu mean agh‍ni ka adhan karana chahiye; us samay ki sh‍thapit ki huee agh‍ni ko vaishh‍y yoni kahate haian. panh‍dunanh‍dan! jo vaishh‍y sharad-rritu mean agh‍ni ki sh‍thapana karata hai, usaki samh‍patti, praja, ayu, pashu aur dhan ki vriddhi hoti hai. sab prakar ke ras, ghi adi sh‍nigh‍dh padarth, suganh‍dhit dravh‍y, rath‍n, mani, suvarn aur loha- in sabaki uth‍patti agh‍nihotr ke liye hi hai.

agh‍nihotr ko hi janane ke liye ayurved, dhanurved, mimaansa, vish‍trit nh‍yay-shash‍tr aur dharmashash‍tr ka nirman kiya gaya hai. chhanh‍d, shiksha, kalp, vh‍yakaran, jh‍yautish shash‍tr aur nirukh‍t bhi agh‍nihotr ke liye rache gaye haian. itihas, puran, gatha, upanishad aur atharvaved ke karm bhi agh‍nihotr ke liye hi haian. nishh‍pap! tithi, nakshatr, yog, muhurt aur karanaroop kal ka jnan praph‍t karane ke liye poorvakal mean jh‍yautish-shash‍tr ka nirman hua hai. rrigh‍ved, yajurved aur samaved ke manh‍troan ke chhanh‍d ka jnan praph‍t karane ke liye tatha sanshay aur vikalh‍p ke nirakaranapoorvak unaka tath‍vik arth samajhane ke liye chhanh‍d:shash‍tr ki rachana ki gee hai.
