yudhishthir ne poochha- pitamah! jo shash‍troan ke tattv ko nahian janata, jisaka man sada sanshay mean hi p da rahata hai tatha jisane paramarth ke liye koee nishchit dhh‍yey nahian banaya hai, us purush ka kalyan kaise ho s‍kata hai?

bhishm ji ne kaha- yudhishthir! sada gurujanoan ki pooja, vriddh purushoan ki seva aur shash‍troan ka shravan- ye tin kalyan ke amogh sadhan bataye jate haian. is vishay mean bhi janakar manushy devarshi narad aur maharshi galav ke sanvadaroop prachin itihas ko udaharan diya karate haian. ek samay ki bat hai, kalyan ki ichh‍chha rakhane vale jitendriy galav muni ne apane ashram par padhare hue devopam tejash‍vi brahman, moh aur kh‍lanti se rahit, jnanananh‍d se paripoorn evan man ko vash mean rakhane vale devarshi narad ji se is prakar poochha- 'mune! sansar mean koee bhi purush jin gunoan dvara sammanit hota hai, un samash‍t gunoan ka maian apamean kabhi abhav nahian dekhata hooan. lok-tattv ke jnan se shoonh‍y aur chirakal se ajnan mean p de hue ham-jaise logoan ke sanshay ka nivaran sarvagunasampanh‍n ap-jaisa mahatma hi kar sakata hai. mune! shash‍troan mean bahut- se kartavh‍yakarm bataye gaye haian, unamean amuk karm ke is prakar karane se jnanamarg mean pravriti ho sakati hai, isaka vishesharoop se hamean nishh‍chay nahian ho pata hai; at: hamare liye jo kartavh‍y ho aur jisaka nirdharan ham n kar pate hoan, use ap hi hamean batane ki kripa karean.

bhagavan! sabhi ashramoan vale prithak-prithak achar ka darshan karate haian tatha 'yah shreshth hai, yah shreshth hai' aisa upadesh dete hue ve (apane hi siddhanh‍toan ki shreshthata ka pratipadan karate haian aur) sabhi manushyoan ki buddhi mean yahi bat jama dete haian. jinake man mean vah bat baith gayi hai, un sabako un shash‍troan ke upadesh ke anusar nana prakar ke achar marg se chalate aur apane-apane shash‍troan ka abhinanh‍dan karate dekhakar jaise ham apani manh‍yata mean santusht haian, vaise hi unh‍hean bhi santusht pakar hamare man mean sanshay utpanh‍n ho gaya hai. ham yah thik-thik nishh‍chay nahian kar pa rahe haian ki paramakalyan ki prapti ka sarvashreshth upay kh‍ya hai? yadi shash‍tr ek hota to shrey ki prapti ka upay bhi ek hi hone ke karan vah sh‍pasht roop se samajh mean a jata, parantu bahut-se shash‍troan ne nana prakar se varnan karake shrey ko guhy avash‍tha mean pahuancha diya hai- use atyanh‍t goodh bana dala hai. is karan se mujhe shrey ka sh‍varoop sanshayachh‍chhanh‍n jan p data hai. bhagavan! ab ap hi mujhe usaka upadesh dean. maian apaki sharan mean aya hooan, ap mujh shishy ko shreyomarg ka bodh karayean.'

narad ji ne kaha- tat! ashram char haian aur shash‍troan mean unaki prithak-prithak vh‍yavash‍tha ki gayi hai. galav! tum jnan ka ashray lekar un sabako yathartharoop se jano. vipravar! un-un ashramoan ke jo nana prakar se gun-sampanh‍n dharm bataye gaye haian, unaki prithak-prithak sthiti hai. is bat ko tum dekho aur samajho.[1] jo sadharan manushy haian, ve un ashramoan ke va‍sh‍tavik abhipray ko bhali-bhaanti sanshayarahit nahian jan pate, kiantu unase bhinh‍n jo tattvajn haian, ve in ashramoan ke paramatattv ko thik-thik samajhate haian. jo achh‍chhi tarah kalyan karane vala sadhan hota hai, vah sarvatha sanshayarahit hota hai. suhridoan par anugrah karana, shatrubhav rakhane vale dushtoan ko dand dena tatha dharm, arth aur kam ka sangrah karana- ise manishi purush shrey kahate haian. papakarm se door rahana, niranh‍tar punyakarmoan mean lage rahana aur satyapurushoan ke sath rahakar sadachar ka thik-thik palan karana- yah sanshayarahit kalyan ka marg hai. sampoorn praniyoan ke prati komalata ka bartav karana, vh‍yavahar mean saral hona tatha mithe vachan bolana- yah bhi kalyan ka sandeharahit marg hai. devataoan, pitaroan aur atithiyoan ko unaka bhag dena tatha bharan-poshan karane yogh‍y vh‍yaktiyoan ka tyag n karana- yah kalyan ka nishchit sadhan hai. saty bolana bhi shreyash‍‍kar hai; parantu saty ko yathartharoop se janana kathin hai. maian to usi ko saty kahata hooan, jisase praniyoan ka atyanh‍t hit hota ho. ahankar ka tyag, pramad ko rokana, santosh aur ekanh‍tavas- yah sunishchit shrey kahalata hai.

jahaan guru aur shishy ka vh‍yavahar suvh‍yasthit, shash‍tr-sammat evan yathavat roop se chalata hai, kaun us desh ka parityag karega? jahaan ke log bina kisi adhar ke hi vidvan purushoan par nishchit roop se dosharopan karate hoan, us desh mean atmasamman ki ichh‍chha rakhane vala kaun manushy nivas karega? jahaan lalachi manushyoan ne pray: dharm ki maryadaean to d dali hoan, jalate hue kap de ki bhaanti us desh ko kaun nahian tyag dega? parantu jahaan ke log matsary aur shanka se rahit hokar dharm ka acharan karate hoan, vahaan punyashil sadhu purushoan ke pas avashh‍y nivas kare. jahaan ke manushy dhan ke liye dharm ka anushthan karate hoan, vahaan unake pas kadapi n rahe; kh‍yoanki ve sab-ke sab papachari hote haian. jahaan jivan ki raksha ke liye log papakarm se jivika chalate hoan, sarpayukh‍t ghar ke saman us sh‍than se turant hat jana chahiye. apani unh‍nati chahane vale sadhak ko chahiye ki jis papakarm ke sansh‍karoan se yukh‍t hua manushy khat par p dakar du:kh bhogata hai, us karm ko pahale se hi n karean.[3] jahaan raja aur raja ke nikatavarti anh‍y purush kutumbi-janoan se pahale hi bhojan kar lete haian, us rashtr ko manash‍vi purush avashh‍y tyag de. jis desh mean sada dharmaparayan, yajn karane aur padhane ke kary mean sanlagh‍n sanatanadharmi shro‍triy brahman hi sabase pahale bhojan pate hoan, us rashtr mean avashh‍y nivas karean. jahaan sh‍vaha (agnihotr), sh‍vadha (shraddhakarm) tatha vashatkar ka bhali-bhaanti anushthan hota ho aur niranh‍tar ye sabhi karm kiye jate hoan, vahaan bina vichare hi nivas karana chahiye. jahaan brahmanoan ko jivika ke liye kasht pate tatha apavitr avash‍tha mean rahate dekhe, us rashtr ko nikatavarti hone par bhi vishamishrit bhogh‍yavash‍tu ki bhaanti tyag dean. jahaan ke log prasanh‍natapoorvak bina maange hi bhiksha dete hoan, vahaan man ko vash mean k‍rane vala purush kritakrity ki bhaanti sh‍vash‍thachitt hokar nivas karean.

jahaan uddand purushoan ko dand diya jata ho aur jitatma purushoan ka satkar kiya jata ho, vahaan punyashil shreshth purushoan ke bich vicharana aur nivas karana chahiye. jo jitendriy purushoan par krodh aur shreshth purushoan par atyachar karate hoan, uddand aur lobhi hoan, aise logoan ko jahaan atyanh‍t kathor aur mahan dand diya jata ho, us desh mean bina vichare nivas karana chahiye. jahaan raja sada dharmaparayan rahakar dharmanusar hi rajh‍y ka palan karata ho aur sampoorn kamanaoan ka sh‍vami hokar bhi vishayabhog se vimukh rahata ho, vahaan bina kuchh soche-vichare nivas karana chahiye. kh‍yoanki raja ke shil-sh‍vabhav jaise hote haian vaise hi praja ke bhi ho jate haian. vah apane kalyan ka avasar upasthit hone par praja ko bhi shighr hi kalyan ka bhagi bana deta hai. tat! maianne tumhare prashh‍n ke anusar yah shreyomarg ka varnan kiya hai. poornataya to atmakalyan ki pariganana ho hi nahian sakati. jo is prakar ki vriti se rahakar jivika chalata hai aur praniyoan ke hit mean man lagaye rahata hai, us purush ko sh‍vadharmaroop tap ke anushthan se is lok mean hi paramakalyan ki pratyaksh up‍labdhi ho jayegi.[4]
