dharm, arth aur kam ke vishay mean vidur tatha panh‍davoan ke prithak-prithak vichar tatha ant mean yudhishthir ka nirnay

vaishamh‍payan ji kahate haian- janamejay! yah kahakar jab bhishh‍m ji chup ho gaye, tab raja yudhishthir ghar jakar apane charoan bhaiyoan tatha paanchavean vidur ji se prashh‍n kiya- ‘logoan ki pravriti pray: dharm, arth aur kam ki or hoti hai. in tinoan mean kaun sabase shreshth, kaun madhh‍yam aur kaun laghu hai?’ ‘in tinoan par vijay pane ke liye visheshat: kisamean man lagana chahiye. ap sab log harsh aur utsah ke sath is prashh‍n ka yathavat roop se utar dean aur vahi bat kahean, jis par apaki poori astha ho’. tab arth ki gati aur tattv ko janane vale pratibhashali vidur ji ne dharmashastr ka smaran karake sabase pahale kahana arambh kiya.

vidur ji ne bole- rajan! bahut-se shastroan ka anushilan, tapasya, tyag, shraddha, yajn karm, kshama, bhavashuddhi, daya, saty aur sanyam- ye sab atma ki sampatti haian. yudhishthir! tum inhian ko prapt karo. inaki or se tumhara man vichalit nahian hona chahiye. dharm aur arth ki j d ye hi haian. mere mat mean ye hi param pad haian. dharm se hi rrishiyoan ne sansar-samuandr ko par kiya hai. dharm par hi sampoorn lok tike hue haian. dharm se hi devataoan ki unnati huee hai aur dharm mean hi arth ki bhi sthiti hai. rajan! dharm hi shreshth gun hai, arth ko madhh‍yam bataya jata hai aur kam sabaki apeksha laghu hai; aisa manishi purush kahate haian. at: man ko vash mean karake dharm ko apana pradhan dhh‍yey banana chahiye aur sampoorn praniyoan ke sath vaisa hi bartav karana chahiye, jaisa ham apane liye chahate haian.

vaishampayan ji kahate haian- janamejay! vidur ji ke bat samapt hone par dharm aur arth ke tattv ko janane vale arthashastravisharad arjun ne yudhishthir ki ajna pakar kaha. arjun bole- rajan! yah karmabhoomi hai. yahaan jivika ke sadhan bhoot karmoan ki hi prashansa hoti hai. kheti, vyapar, gau palan tatha bhaanti–bhaanti ke shilh‍p- ye sab arth prapti ke sadhan haian. arth hi samast karmoan ki maryada ke palan mean sahayak hai. arth ke bina dharm aur kam bhi siddh nahian hote– aisa shruti ka kathan hai. dhanavan manushh‍y dhan ke dvara uth‍tam dharm ka palan aur ajitendriy purushoan ke liye durlabh kamanaoan ki prapti kar sakata hai. shruti ka kathan hai ki dharm aur kam arth ke hi do avayav haian. arth ki siddhi se un donoan ki bhi siddhi ho jayagi. jaise sab prani sada brahma ji ki upasana karate haian, usi prakar uth‍tam jati ke manushh‍y bhi sada dhanavan purush ki upasana kiya karate haian. jata aur mrigacharm dharan karane vale jitendriy sanyatachitt sharir mean pank dharan kiye munditamastak naishthik brahmachari bhi arth ki abhilasha rakhakar prithak-prithak nivas karate haian. sab prakar ke sangrah se rahit, sankochashil, shant, gerooa vastradhari, dadhi-mooanchh badha़ye vidvan purush bhi dhan ki abhilasha karate dekhe gaye haian. kuchh doosare prakar ke aise log haian jo svarg pane ki ichchha rakhate haian; aur kul paramparagat niyamoan ka palan karate hue apane-apane varn tatha ashram ke dharmoan ka anushthan kar rahe haian; kiantu ve bhi dhan ki ichchha rakhate haian.
