mas, paksh evan tithi sambandhi vibhinn vratopavas ke phal ka varnan

yudhishthir ne poochha- pitamah! sabhi varnoan aur mlechchh jati ke log bhi upavas mean man lagate haian, kiantu isaka kya karan hai? yah samajh mean nahian ata. pitamah! sunane mean aya hai ki brahman aur kshatriyoan ko niyamoan ka palan karana chahiye; parantu upavas karane se kis prakar unake prayojan ki siddhi hoti hai, yah nahian jan p data hai. prithvinath! ap kripa karake hamean sampoorn niyamoan aur upavasoan ki vidhi bataiye. tat! upavas karane vala manushy kis gati ko prapt hota hai. narashreshth! kahate haian, upavas b da puny hai aur upavas sabase b da ashray hai; parantu upavas karake yahaan manushy kaun-sa phal pata hai?

bharatashreshth! manushy kis karm ke dvara pap se chhutakara pata hai aur kya karane se kis prakar use dharm ki prapti hoti hai? vah puny aur svarg kaise pata hai? nareshh‍var! upavas karake manushy ko kis vastu ka dan karana chahiye? jis dharm se sukh aur dhan ki prapti ho sake, vahi mujhe bataiye.

vaishampayan ji kahate hai- janamejay! dharmajn dharmaputr kuntikumar yudhishthir ke is prakar poochhane par dharm ke tattv ko janane vale shaantanunandan bhishm ne unase is prakar kaha.

bhishm ji ne kaha- rajan! bharatashreshth! upavas karane mean jo shreshth gun hai, unake vishay mean maianne prachin kal mean is tarah sun rakha hai. bharat! jis tarah aj tumane mujhase prashh‍n kiya hai, isi prakar maianne bhi poorvakal mean tapodhan aangira muni se prashh‍n kiya tha. bharatabhoosh! jab maianne yah prashh‍n poochha, tab agninandan bhagavan aangira ne mujhe upavas ki pavitr vidhi is prakar bataee.

aangira bole- kurunandan! brahman aur kshatriy ke liye tin rat upavas karane ka vidhan hai. kahian-kahian do triratr aur ek din arthat kul sat din upavas karane ka sanket mila hai. vaishyoan aur shoodroan ne jo mohavash tin rat athava do rat ka upavas kiya hai, usaka unhean koee phal nahian mila hai. vaishy aur shoodr ke liye chauthe samay tak ke bhojan ka tyag karane ka vidhan hai. arthat unhean keval do din aur do ratri tak upavas karana chahiye; kyoanki dharmashastr ke jnata evan dharmadarshi vidvanoan ne unake liye tin rat tak upavas karane ka vidhan nahian kiya hai.

bharat! yadi manushy panchami, shashthi aur poornima ke din apane man aur indriyoan ko kaboo mean rakhakar ek vakt bhojan karake doosare vakt upavas kare to vah kshamavan, roopavan aur vidvan hota hai. vah buddhiman purush kabhi santanahin ya daridr nahian hota hai.

kurunandan! jo purush bhagavan ki aradhana ka ichchhuk hokar panchami, shashthi, ashtami tatha krishn paksh ki chaturdashi ko apane ghar par brahman ko bhojan karata hai aur svayan upavas karata hai, vah rogarahit aur balavan hota hai. jo margashirsh mas ko ek samay bhojan karake bitata hai aur apani shakti ke anusar brahman ko bhojan karata hai, vah rog aur papoan se mukt ho jata hai.
