yudhishthir ke vividh dharmayukt prashnoan ka uttar tatha shraddh aur dan ke uttam patroan ka lakshan
markandey ji ke dvara vividh prashn aur narad ji ke dvara unaka uttar

yudhishthir ne poochha- nareshvar! maharaj! putroan dvara purush ka kaise uddhar hota hai? jab tak putr ki prapti n ho, tab tak purush ka jivan nishphal kyoan mana jata hai?

bhishm ji ne kaha- rajan! is vishay mean is prachin itihas ka udaharan diya jata hai. poorvakal mean markandey ke poochhane par devarshi narad ne jo upadesh diya tha, usi ka is itihas mean ullekh hua hai. pahale ki bat hai, ganga-yamuna ke madhy bhag mean jahaan bhagavati ka samagam hua hai, vahian parvat, narad, asit, deval, arooney aur raibhy- ye rrishi ekatr hue the. in sab rrishiyoan ko vahaan pahale se virajaman dekh markandey ji bhi gaye. rrishiyoan ne jab muni ko ate dekha, tab ve sab-ke-sab uthakar unaki or mukh karake kh de ho gaye aur un brahmarshi ki unake yogy pooja karake sab ne poochha- 'ham apaki kya seva karean?'

markandey ji ne kaha- maianne b de yatn se satpurushoan ka yah sang prapt kiya hai. mujhe asha hai, yahaan dharm aur achar ka nirnay prapt hoga. satyayug mean dharm ka anushthan saral hota hai. us yug ke samapt ho jane par dharm ka svaroop manushyoan ke moh se achchhann ho jata hai; atah pratyek yug ke dharm ka kya svaroop hai? ise maian ap sab maharshiyoan se janana chahata hooan.

bhishm ji kahate haian- rajan! tab sab rrishiyoan ne milakar narad ji se kaha- 'tattvajn devarshe! markandey ji ko jis vishay mean sandeh hai, usaka ap niroopan kijiye; kyoanki dharm aur adharm ke vishay mean hone vale samast sanshayoan ka nivaran karane mean ap samarth haian.' rrishiyoan ki yah anumati aur adesh pakar narad ji ne sampoorn dharm aur arth ke tattv ko janane vale markandey ji se poochha. narad ji bole- 'tapasya se prakashit hone vale dirghayu markandey ji! ap to svayan hi vedoan aur vedaangoan ke tattv ko janane vale haian, tathapi brahman! jahaan apako sanshay utpann hua ho, vah vishay upasthit kijiye. mahatapasvi maharshe! dharm, lokopakar athava aur jis kisi vishay mean ap sunana chahate hoan, use kahiye. maian us vishay ka niroopan karooanga.'

markandey ji bole- pratyek yug ke bit jane par dharm ki maryada nasht ho jati hai. phir dharm ke bahane se adharm karane par maian us dharm ka phal kaise prapt kar sakata hooan? mere man mean yahi prashn uthata hai.

narad ji ne kaha- vipravar! pahale satyayug mean dharm apane charoan pairoan se yukt hokar sabake dvara palit hota tha. tadanantar samayanusar adharm ki pravritti huee aur usane apana sir kuchh ooancha kiya. tadanantar dharm ko aanshatah dooshit karane vale treta namak doosare yug ki pravritti huee. jab vah bhi bit gaya, tab tisare yug dvapar ka padarpan hua. us samay dharm ke do pairoan ko adharm nasht kar deta hai. dvapar ke nasht hone par jab nandik (kaliyug) upasthit hota hai, us samay lokachar aur dharm ka jaisa svaroop rah jata hai, use batata hooan, suniye. chauthe yug ka nam hai nandik. us samay dharm ka ek hi pad aanshashesh rah jata hai. tabhi se mandabuddhi aur alpayu manushy utpann hone lagate haian. lok mean unaki pran-shakti bahut kam ho jati hai. ve nirdhan tatha dharm aur sadachar se bahishkrit hote haian.
